As reported by Hot Hardware, the company is defending itself by saying that it doesn’t need to infringe on the patents of others and that it already invests billions of dollars each year to “independently develop its world-class, leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing technologies”. Earlier yesterday, GlobalFoundries filed a patent suit against the rival semiconductor company, both in courts within the US and Germany. In total, the lawsuits cover 16 patents, ranging from products using TSMC’s 28nm, 16n, 12nm, 10nm, and 7nm process nodes.
In light of the lawsuits, GlobalFoundries is also seeking a ban against products that infringe against the patents from being shipped out to the US and Germany. This is a problem in and of itself, as many of TSMC’s products are used by major clients, including NVIDIA and Qualcomm, to name a couple. To be more precise, TSMC provides the technology and chips used in the production of NVIDIA’s GeForce GPUs, while Qualcomm’s own Snapdragon chipset is partially built with TSMC’s help. “We will fight vigorously, using and all options, to protect our proprietary technologies,” said TSMC at the end of its official post.
