Gamebiz.jp reports that both Square Enix and Nexon decided to cancel the FF 11 mobile reboot because it “failed to meet creative standards” for the series. Beyond that though, no details were disclosed about what exactly was found so wanting.
All that being said, the idea of a mobile MMO is strange in and of itself. Granted, there is currently one existing example in the form of Ragnarok M: Eternal Love. It may be what the folks at Square Enix and Nexon were aiming for – a very much simplified version of the game with more quality of life improvements. Ultimately, it’s probably no real loss of Final Fantasy fans. If players wanted an MMO, they’ll probably jump into FF 14 rather than 11. Though it should be noted that, despite the success of FF 14, FF 11 is still going strong on its own. Which is a strange thing to see, a series having two MMO entries, and both doing well simultaneously. (Source: Gamebiz.jp via Gematsu. Image: Steam)
