The publisher says that this can happen “under certain conditions”, but did not specify what they are. When it happens, you’ll get an error message when you boot the game that says that your local save conflicts with the save in the Steam cloud. While Bandai Namco is working on a fix, all you really need to do when you boot up Elden Ring and get the error message is to pay attention to the save file date and time. Select the most recent one and sync that one across your PC and the Steam cloud. If you need another layer of safety, the publisher recommends you make a separate back up save file after every play session. Just in case you overwrite the wrong save file. It might just be worth the trouble, if the alternative is losing hours of progress in Elden Ring. And while of a different flavour, it shows that the PS5 version of the game is not the only one with save issues. (Source: Bandai Namco via PC Gamer)
