The new deal is an extension to the local roaming deal for 2G and 3G networks that all three companies have signed back in January 2016. In theory, the new deal should allow Unifi Mobile customers to be connected to the 4G network even when they are out of Unifi’s own 4G coverage areas.
In his response to our query during last week’s press conference, the CEO of Celcom, Idham Nawawi has stated that the offer to TM was formulated based on Celcom’s own network capacity as well as the expected data consumption of customers from both companies. The needs of three other Mobile Virtual Network Operators that are also riding on Celcom’s network have been considered as well. Hence, Idham has assured the new deal with TM shouldn’t affect Celcom customers. As mentioned in our previous report, the maximum capacity of Celcom’s core network currently stands at 750Gbps while the amount of traffic that has gone through its network was measured at 997.3 PB (equivalent to 997.3 million GB) in 2018.
